The SGLG is one of the most coveted performance awards in the country. This initiative of the Department garnered much interest not only from the local government units but also from various government agencies, and very much so that Congress saw it fit to pass a law institutionalizing SGLG as an award, incentive, honor, and recognition-based program to boost LGUs’ drive to constantly progress and/or sustain their notable performance across various governance areas.
RA No. 11292 or “The SGLG Act” was enacted in 2019 and its IRR was approved in December 2020, Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it is only now that the first full-blown implementation of the SGLG Act will come to fruition. New institutional arrangements are placed and 79 indicators in 10 governance areas will be used for assessment. Hence, right after the National Orientation, a two-and-a-half-day Regional Orientation was conducted on March 22-24, 2022.
Regional focal persons of LGMED, provinces, and HUC worked together to orient the field officers and CSO partners in all matters that they would need to prepare and use during the implementation period.

With the very short timeline given to regions due to the perceived impact of elections, (March to May) the region hopes that the Orientation and brainstorming of strategies helped field officers in implementing the program because the people need and deserve good governance.
